General Rule
Most US states do not require notarization for a standard private motor vehicle bill of sale. Both parties' signatures are typically sufficient.
Notarization adds a layer of verification where a notary public confirms the identities of the signers. Some states mandate this for vehicle transfers.
States That Require Notarization
We do not support document creation for states requiring notarization: Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and West Virginia.
If your sale is in one of these states, visit a notary public and check your state's official DMV requirements.
When Notarization Is Recommended
Even in states where it is not required, some sellers and buyers choose notarization for high-value vehicles or when a buyer wants extra assurance.
Our service does not provide notarization. We focus on the 45 states where electronic signatures on a standard bill of sale are acceptable.
